TDR Reflectometer: Megger offers you the greatest experience in time domain reflectometry. The method is also known to many of you as Time Domain Reflectometry, or TDR for short. It involves the determination and analysis of travel lengths and reflection characteristics of electromagnetic signals and waves in electrical conductors. Some people know this technology also under the name “cable radar”, because the principle is indeed similar to a conventional radar. The length measurement of cables in the electrical industry was one of the first important applications.

This involves measuring the time it takes for an electrical impulse to return to its origin. If one now knows the speed of propagation in the cable, which also depends on the dielectric, one can directly deduce the length of the cable from the time. On its way one recognizes also many other “events” like, connection, branches or – errors in the isolation or in the conductor caused by break, corrosion and much more besides.

With a pulse width of only 2 ns at a resolution of 0.1 m, the new type TDR 1000-3 time domain reflectometer for cable fault location from Megger features the new “Ultra Fast Pulse” technology. This improves fault location, especially in the near vicinity of metallic data and telecommunication cables. The new auto-setup function immediately recognizes the cable under test and sets all parameters appropriately in a fraction of a second; this saves time and ensures correct measurement results every time. The Trace Hold function allows clear comparison between two routes. The TDR 1000/3 has a large, high-resolution LCD display with white backlighting and various gray scales. This supports the graphical display in identifying the most important events on the track.

TDR Meter: The TDR 2050 gives you two channels, very high resolution and a colour screen so you can locate faults on paired metal cables. With a minimum resolution of 0.1 m and a maximum range of 20 km, depending on the selected speed factor and cable type, you can locate any “event” on your cable and virtually any problem. Depending on the model, you use different output impedances from 25, 50, 75, 100, 125 up to 140 ohms. Automatic impedance matching is an additional feature.

With the Time Domain Reflectometer, you can set the speed factor between 0.2 and 0.99 to meet all cable testing requirements. It also gives you CAT IV 600 V input, protective filters, built-in TDR selection options of level and pulse, distance-dependent gain testing directly from the box as well as tracking markers, a pulse width of two nanoseconds for use on all twisted pair metal cables. The TDR2000 series has a large, high-resolution, colour WVGA display with easily adjustable performance features. Directional control buttons together with soft keys make operation intuitive and easy for the user.

An AUTO selection option ensures that the most effective parameters are selected depending on the required range, supporting rapid diagnosis of TDR tracking. The ability to manually override the Auto function allows fine-tuning and detection of hard-to-detect errors. The dual tracking and dual cursor capability allows complete flexibility; the operator has complete control and instant distance indication between the two points. The tracking comparison feature also allows for in-depth inspection between tracking conditions. Extra high resolution together with daylight backlighting and user definable colour schemes give the graphical display a dynamism that helps the operator to identify key tracking events.
